Tarragona at a glance

A flat in Sant Pere i Sant Pau or in the centre of Reus that stands empty from eight to five, an apartment in Salou, Cambrils, La Pineda or Calafell belonging to a family from Barcelona, Zaragoza or Lleida and shut from October to June, a villa on an urbanisation in the Baix Penedès or Mont-roig where squatters are the worry, a mas (farmhouse) in the Priorat or a country house in the Delta: in Tarragona the Segurma alarm is set up differently in each case, and in Catalonia the alert goes to the Mossos d'Esquadra. Here we explain it comarca by comarca.

What happens in Tarragona when your alarm goes off

In Catalonia, public safety is the responsibility of the Mossos d'Esquadra. When Segurma's Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) confirms an intrusion at a home in the province of Tarragona, the alert goes to the Mossos station covering that municipality (Tarragona, Reus, Salou, Cambrils, Valls, El Vendrell, Calafell, Torredembarra, Tortosa, Amposta, Montblanc, Falset, Móra d'Ebre or Gandesa), together with the images of the moment. In Tarragona, Reus, Salou or El Vendrell the local police also patrol and work alongside them.

The sequence is always the same. A camera detector picks up movement in the living room while the system is armed, or a magnetic sensor notices the terrace sliding door being opened. The alarm panel sends the signal to Segurma's ARC, together with a few images of that moment and the audio from the room. An operator reviews them. If it is the person who cleans the apartment and she has come in with her tag, nothing happens; if there is someone who should not be there, the alarm is confirmed as real and the ARC alerts the Mossos and passes on those images. You get the notification in the app at that moment, whether you are in Tarragona, Barcelona or Zaragoza, and you can watch the cameras live.

The alert comes from Segurma, an authorised security company listed in the National Private Security Register under number 3082. It is a verified alert backed by images: for the Mossos station in Calafell or Cambrils in January, with thousands of apartments shut up, that is the difference between a suspicion and a fact.

Empty buildings in winter, urbanisations with no fibre, and the mistral wind

On the Costa Daurada there are whole buildings where nobody lives in winter, many inland urbanisations have no fibre, and the wind knocks out the power along the Ebro. The alarm panel has its own battery and communicates over your home line and over 4G/5G: if one route fails, the other keeps the link to Segurma's ARC.

Where Segurma installs in Tarragona province

Across the whole province, from Cunit to Alcanar and from the coast to the Priorat and the Terra Alta. These are the comarcas (districts) and the type of home we most often find in each one.

Tarragona and the Tarragonès: Tarragona, Constantí, La Canonja, Els Pallaresos, Altafulla, Torredembarra, Roda de Berà, Creixell, Salou and Vila-seca

Flats in the Part Alta, l'Eixample, el Serrallo, Sant Pere i Sant Pau, Bonavista, Torreforta, Campclar and Sant Salvador; villas in Llevant, La Mora, Cala Romana, Boscos, Els Pallaresos and Altafulla; holiday apartments in Salou, La Pineda, Torredembarra and Roda. In a flat you protect the door, reachable terraces and windows and the hallway; in a villa, the perimeter.

Baix Camp: Reus, Cambrils, Mont-roig (Miami Platja), Vandellòs-L'Hospitalet de l'Infant, La Selva del Camp, Riudoms, Castellvell and Almoster

Flats in Reus, holiday apartments and villas in Cambrils, Miami Platja and L'Hospitalet, second-home urbanisations in Mont-roig and in the hills above Reus, and masos (farmhouses) out in the countryside.

Baix Penedès: El Vendrell, Calafell, Segur de Calafell, Cunit, Bellvei, L'Arboç, Santa Oliva, Banyeres and Albinyana

The comarca with the most second-home urbanisations in the province: Calafell Park, Mas Romeu, Bonaterra, Segur de Dalt, Cunit Diagonal, Els Masos de Coma-ruga, many of them shut during the week or for whole months, with owners from Barcelona. It is where squatting worries people most: outdoor detector, sensors on every entrance and an IP camera.

Alt Camp and Conca de Barberà: Valls, Alcover, El Pla de Santa Maria, Montblanc, L'Espluga de Francolí and Santa Coloma de Queralt

Flats in Valls and Montblanc, village houses with a yard and masos among the vines and hazel groves, many of them second homes.

Priorat and Ribera d'Ebre: Falset, Gratallops, Cornudella, Móra d'Ebre, Móra la Nova, Flix, Ascó, Tivissa and Miravet

Stone village houses, masos among the vineyards and houses beside the Ebro, with families who live in Reus or Barcelona and come back for the grape harvest and the local fiestas.

Baix Ebre: Tortosa, Deltebre, L'Ametlla de Mar, L'Ampolla, Roquetes, El Perelló and Camarles

Flats in Tortosa, country houses in the Delta, holiday apartments and villas in L'Ametlla, L'Ampolla, Riumar and Les Tres Cales, and masos inland.

Montsià: Amposta, Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Alcanar (Les Cases), Ulldecona, La Sénia and Santa Bàrbara

Flats in Amposta and La Ràpita, country houses in the Delta and among the market gardens, and second homes in Les Cases d'Alcanar and along the La Ràpita coast.

Terra Alta: Gandesa, Batea, Horta de Sant Joan, Arnes and Corbera d'Ebre

Stone village houses and masos, with few neighbours in sight and the police station some distance away. Verification before the alert and the 4G/5G link are what make the alarm work here.

If your town is not listed, Segurma installs there too: the whole province is within the service area. We confirm the lead time by postcode during the survey.

How burglars get into homes in Tarragona and what stops them

Home burglaries are almost always done while the house is empty, in minutes, through the easiest way in. In Tarragona that way in changes a lot between a flat in Reus, an apartment in Salou and a villa on an urbanisation in Calafell.

Flat in Tarragona, Reus, Valls, Tortosa or Amposta

The front door (old locks opened by slipping the latch or by bumping, or forced on a landing with no neighbours about), balconies and windows of ground-floor and first-floor flats reached from the street or from a shop below, and penthouse terraces reached from the roof. A magnetic sensor on the door raises the alert at the first attempt; a camera detector in the hallway captures whoever comes in; the indoor siren makes an intruder in a block of flats leave.

Holiday apartment in Salou, Cambrils, La Pineda, Calafell, Cunit or Miami Platja

The terrace sliding door in ground-floor and first-floor flats, and the front door in buildings that are half empty in winter, where nobody hears a thing. Magnetic sensor on the door and on the sliding door, camera detector in the living room and an IP camera to check the apartment from home.

Villa on an urbanisation in the Baix Penedès, Mont-roig or the hills above Reus

Streets with nobody passing, closed-up houses all around, a plot with sliding doors. The intruder comes in over the back wall, checks whether anyone is home and goes for the living-room sliding door. Covering every entrance with a sensor, fitting an outdoor detector and having an IP camera to look at the house from your phone is what turns that break-in into an alert to the Mossos while it is happening.

Mas or country house in the Priorat, the Delta or the Terra Alta

Several ways in (front door, threshing floor, yard, storeroom), and often not a neighbour in sight. Sensors on every entrance, camera detectors on the route everyone has to take and an outdoor detector. The panel's battery and 4G/5G keep the link to Segurma's ARC even if the power goes off.

When it happens

August in Tarragona and Reus, when the city heads for the beach; winter in the Costa Daurada apartments, shut from October to June; weekdays in the weekend urbanisations of the Baix Penedès; and long weekends in the masos inland. With the alarm armed and connected, those days stop being any different.

Anti-squatter alarm in Tarragona: urbanisations, closed-up apartments and inherited flats

Tarragona is, along with Girona, the Catalan province where most people ask us about squatting, because of how much housing sits empty for months: villas on the urbanisations of the Baix Penedès and the Baix Camp, Costa Daurada apartments belonging to families from Barcelona, Zaragoza, Lleida or Madrid, inherited flats in Tarragona, Reus or Tortosa, and masos inland. These are exactly the homes where a squat takes weeks to be discovered.

If the break-in is detected as it happens, with images of someone forcing the sliding door, the Mossos can act on an offence in progress. If you find out when you arrive at Easter, what is left is a court case. The whole point of an anti-squatter alarm lies in that first minute.

What the system does in an empty home

  • The magnetic sensors on doors, windows and sliding doors raise the alert at the first attempt to open them, not once the intruder has already changed the lock.
  • The camera detector takes images of whoever comes in and sends them to Segurma's ARC, which verifies them and alerts the Mossos with those images.
  • The warning sign and the siren mean the apartment or the house does not look abandoned, which is the first thing anyone choosing a home to squat looks for.
  • With the IP camera in the Kit Tranquilidad Plus you can check the house from your phone, whether you are in Tarragona, Barcelona or Zaragoza.

The legal framework, in short

If the house is your dwelling, even a second home you use, entering it is breaking and entering (allanamiento de morada); if the property is nobody's dwelling, it is unlawful occupation (usurpación). Since April 2025 both offences go through the fast-track court procedure, and even so the practical difference does not go away: a break-in detected and verified while it is happening can be stopped on the spot, whereas an established squat is settled in court. For a squatting problem that already exists you need a lawyer; this page is no substitute for their advice.

More detail, with the full protocol, on the Segurma anti-squatter alarm page.

Second homes on the Costa Daurada and the Ebro

Cunit, Calafell, Coma-ruga, Roda de Berà, Torredembarra, Altafulla, La Pineda, Salou, Cambrils, Miami Platja, L'Hospitalet de l'Infant, L'Ametlla, L'Ampolla, Riumar, La Ràpita, Les Cases d'Alcanar: the Costa Daurada is the beach for Barcelona, Lleida, Zaragoza and Madrid, with homes that open in July and close in September, in buildings and urbanisations where hardly anyone lives in January.

What a home like this needs is not a siren, which nobody hears in an empty building in February, but someone checking what is going on and alerting the Mossos, and the ability to look at the house yourself from your phone. The Kit Tranquilidad covers the first; the Kit Tranquilidad Plus adds the IP camera with audio for the second. In villas with a garden, the sensors on the sliding doors and the outdoor detector raise the alert before anyone touches the house.

The system is wireless and needs no building work, so there is no need to ask the residents' association for permission or touch the fabric of the house. It communicates over 4G/5G as well as your home line, so you do not need to take out fibre at the second home.

Everything that changes when the house sits empty for months: alarm for holiday homes.

Which kit for each home in the province

The final kit is decided during the survey; these are the combinations that come up most often in Tarragona. Tap your type of home to see which kit it needs and what it includes.

Typical situations in Tarragona

These three cases come up again and again in survey calls from the province; we describe them in general terms so you can check whether yours fits.

The Salou, Cambrils or Calafell apartment of a family from Barcelona, Lleida or Zaragoza

Opened up in July and on long weekends; the rest of the year, a half-empty building. Sensor on the door and the sliding door, camera detector in the living room, Kit Plus to watch it from home. No fibre: the panel communicates over 4G/5G.

The villa on an urbanisation in Calafell Park, Segur de Dalt or Mont-roig used at weekends

Streets with nobody passing during the week, closed-up houses all around. Outdoor detector, sensors on every entrance and sliding door, camera detector in the living room and an IP camera; the ARC checks every alert and calls the Mossos with the images.

The inherited flat in Sant Pere i Sant Pau, Bonavista or Reus waiting to be sold

Empty for months. Sensors on the door and reachable windows, camera detector in the entrance hall and a warning sign: if someone gets in, the ARC alerts the Mossos while it is happening, not when the family goes round to show the flat.

Common mistakes when protecting a home in Tarragona

Survey calls in the province always bring the same slips to light; these are the usual ones.

  • Leaving the coastal apartment with nothing because “there is nobody there in winter”. That is exactly why. A closed-up home with no warning sign and no alarm in an empty building is the perfect candidate for a burglary or a squat that, by the time you discover it at Easter, is already a matter for the courts.
  • Forgetting the sliding doors. In apartments and villas on urbanisations, the terrace or living-room sliding door is the number one way in. A magnetic sensor on each one.
  • Leaving the villa on the urbanisation with nothing because “there is no fibre”. The panel communicates over 4G/5G and carries a battery: in the Baix Penedès, Mont-roig or the Priorat it works without fibre and rides out the power cuts.
  • A standalone camera instead of an ARC. It shows you the burglary after the fact, from Barcelona; nobody checks it or calls the Mossos. What counts is an operator looking at the images as they come in and alerting the police with them.
  • Relying on the gatehouse of the urbanisation. In Cala Romana, Boscos, Bonaterra or Cambrils Park the guard on the gate checks the cars; he does not see whoever climbs over the back wall of your plot. The connected alarm is the inner layer.
  • Not mentioning the dog. A badly placed detector ends up disconnected because of false alarms; during the survey it is positioned so the pet does not set it off.

What works

Covering the real ways into your home (sliding doors and plot included), having the alarm connected to an ARC that verifies before alerting the Mossos, the indoor siren so the intruder leaves, and the app so you know straight away from wherever you are. In a province where the coast empties in winter and the urbanisations empty during the week, that combination is what stops a burglary or a squat from going through.

Common questions

Questions about the alarm in Tarragona

Who does the alarm alert in Tarragona?

The Mossos d'Esquadra, who are responsible for public safety in Catalonia. Segurma's Alarm Receiving Centre first checks with video and audio that the intrusion is real and then alerts the station covering your municipality, with the images. The local police work alongside them within their remit. You receive the notification in the app at the same moment.

How much does the Segurma alarm cost in Tarragona or Reus?

For the first 12 months, €24.90 a month with VAT, equipment and installation included. From month 13, €43.90 a month for the Kit Tranquilidad and €49.90 a month for the Kit Tranquilidad Plus. The promotion ends on 31 October. It is the same price across Spain; anything added to the kit is quoted during the survey.

I live in Barcelona and have an apartment in Salou. Can I arrange it all remotely?

Yes. The survey is done by phone, the installation is arranged with whoever holds the keys and the app works from anywhere. Segurma's ARC checks every alert and calls the Salou Mossos with the images; you receive the notification at the same time. With the Kit Tranquilidad Plus you can look at the apartment whenever you like.

I have a house on an urbanisation in Calafell or Cunit that sits empty for weeks. What do you recommend?

Kit Tranquilidad Plus with outdoor detector: sensors on every entrance and sliding door, camera detector in the living room, detector on the plot and an IP camera to look at the house from your phone. Segurma's ARC checks every alert and calls the Mossos if there is someone inside. The panel carries a battery and 4G/5G, so it does not depend on the power or on fibre.

Does it work as an anti-squatter alarm in an empty flat in Tarragona or Reus?

It works for detecting the break-in at the moment it happens, which is when the Mossos can act on an offence in progress. The sensors raise the alert at the first attempt to open, the camera detector takes images of whoever comes in and Segurma's ARC verifies them before alerting. A squat discovered weeks later is already a matter for the courts; the alarm is there so you never get to that point.

The mas in the Priorat has no internet. Can I have the alarm?

Yes. The alarm panel has a built-in 4G/5G line and its own battery, so it works without fibre and stays connected to Segurma's ARC if the power goes off. During the survey we check the mobile coverage in your area; it is the usual set-up in the Priorat, the Terra Alta and the Delta.

Does Segurma install in the Terres de l'Ebre?

Yes. Tortosa, Amposta, Deltebre, La Ràpita, Alcanar, L'Ametlla, L'Ampolla, Móra and the whole province are within Segurma's service area. In country houses and remote villages the lead time may vary with the local schedule; it is confirmed during the survey along with the proposed kit.

Does Segurma have a branch in Tarragona?

Segurma is a national security company based in Loiu (Bizkaia), with its own Alarm Receiving Centre and technicians who install across the whole province of Tarragona. Segurma Alarmas, which runs this website, sells its systems: we advise you, carry out the survey and handle the sign-up; the service and the contract are Segurma's.
